About the IBDP

 What is IB Diploma Programme?

The International Baccalaureate programme aims to nurture young people to become inquiring, knowledgeable and caring individuals. Based on understanding and respect for various cultures, students will strive to contribute to a peaceful and better world.

At Kokusai, 1st year students will primary study most mandatory subjects which are aligned with the Japanese national curriculum. Most lessons will be conducted in English, but some subjects such as physical education, Japanese and Japanese history will be conducted in Japanese (see the curriculum). In the 2nd and the 3rd year, students will study in the Diploma programme (DP). Students will study six subjects and three core subjects: EE (Extended Essay), TOK (Theory of Knowledge) and CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service).

 Three Core subjects

EE (Extended Essay) aims to engage students in inquiring a theme, and write a 4,000 words essay in English (or 8,000 words in Japanese).

TOK (Theory of Knowledge) challenges students to investigate thoroughly about use and value of knowledge.

CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) develops students' values and beliefs through experience and social activities in the wider community in which they live.

 Six Groups and their subjects

In the DP, you must choose one subject from each group. Six groups and their subjects are shown below.

※In the DP, lessons are conducted in English (except Japanese subject). At the end of the programme, students will be able to obtain the diploma of graduation of a Japanese high school and IB Diploma. To obtain the full diploma, students are required to mark over 24 out of 45 scores in the final examinations.
